The #1 reason why the United States should be much more aggressive in preventing Iran get nukes is that Iran has been supplying our enemies with weapons, training, and other support for the last 10 years in Iraq and AfPak.

Iran has been at war with the US for a long time. I think it's time to return the favor.

This column has been discussed on the thread titled "Re: Most outspoken European (and many American) 'Intellectuals' are 'Jew Haters'?" in the General Comments section. But this thread is properly in the World Watch section, and more appropriately titled, so perhaps the discussion can be continued here if anyone has more to say.

The truth is Iran will likely try to move against Israel forcing the nation to attack Iran. This will devestate Iran and cause many nations to move on Israel. We will see what happens soon and who comes to help Jacob.

Israel sat still and dumb while Iraq fired 39 Scud missiles at it in 1991. What on earth makes you think that the gutless wonders running the place will do anything at all but whine?

It wasn't as if Israel had anything militarily significant to add in the '91 invasion of Iraq. Situation under control.

Being still and dumb ("dumb"?) served Israel well as PR. It's not as if intruding with conventional military would be useful, nor as if launching a nuke would've been a smart move.

Let's hear it for Israel having sense enough (back then) to know when to restrain itself!

I can only hope that Israel would continue to remain still and dumb. We can't afford another war in this country, and if Israel pokes Iran, we'll be involved whether we like it or not.

It behooves Israel and the U.S. to pressure the U.N. to take serious action on this, but not to get involved directly. Attacking Iran would be justification for more extremist groups to target the U.S. and honestly, based on our continued imperialist presence in the region, it wouldn't be unjustified.

After we've spent 10 years killing muslims in the name of the "War on Terror" is it any wonder the Iranians name their bombs "ambassadors to the US?"

It is good that you base your foreign policy on fear.
It will bring you far

Not that I am in any way a fan of Iran, but when exactly did they threaten to destroy Tel Aviv?

@ Hannibal - there is a distinction between acting on fear and recognizing the truth of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War"

America is not in a position of strength and recognizing that fact is critical. Knowing the limits of your abilities is just as important as having the best weapons.

If we hadn't spent the past 10 years prosecuting an unjust war of occupation on 2 sovereign nations, maybe we would be in a position to affect Iran and Israel's positions, but as things stand now it would be foolish to stretch our military and their time afield any further than they are already stretched.

velcro, are you serious?

@Vindictive, "maybe we would be in a position to affect Iran and Israel's positions,"

You just need to "allow" Israel to act for its own self defense when the time comes.
Israel knows that if it attacks Iran, there will be a total war against Syria/Hizballah/Hamas.

But that was the whole point of Card's article... that there isn't going to be a defense because a nuclear Iran means a nuked Israeli city. Game over.
