Those articles are a generation old, Oz! -- and no, I never used the word 'handsome' in an encyclopedia article in my life! That was ditzy editors. Nor, in the original, did I ever conclude that the art and science were merging like a couple of OSMs! That's why the quippy article in science needs to be entirely revamped in the new edition.

Inappropos: In his excellent book Y: The Descent of Man, Steve Jones describes an ill-fated expedition of Mormons that got caught in an early winter in the Rockies. Ultimately, forty men died through starvation and exhaustion while only four women suffered such a fate.

BTW, Sky: the word handsome just begs to have its etymology checked, don'it?

I believe handsome means handy, as in handyman. That's what women are looking for in a husband: can he chop wood? can he hunt for food? can he castrate pigs? can he bring home the bacon? can he take his boots off when he comes into my just-cleaned cave ...; the rest women can handjob themselves.

Kuato: It was a chad in my googling -- and NO! did not know that the Donner Party (as it is ironically referred to) included Mormons.

Well, I did preface the quote with /inappropos/ but yes, Oz is right. More men are lost at sea than women -- even though men are generally stronger swimmers.

It reminds me of the lab tech fired at UMass because he said publicly: "More men die of more diseases than women in part because we spend more money on women's health." [DOH] It's socially and political advantageous to do so, but this is why women insist upon being viewed as the 'primary caregivers' and 'nurturers'. It's a self-preservation call.

I find it excruciatingly ironic that, about the time we've adequately integrated an objective understanding of accurate biology and its sociological expressions into our understanding of gender definitions, distinctions, and relations, we will also have probably mastered the rudiments of molecular biology to the point that homo sap genetics are no longer products of nature alone but will be increasingly products of human engineering.

About the only thing I personally heard Bill O'Reilly say that I felt was unalloyed truth, was: "Life is conflict and strife."

Of course, that's the emotional interpretation. In objective terms, life is constant adaptation and integration.

I think that's true, Oz, and the Nazis were the bad-boy prototypes; but eugenics will obsolete the mating game altogether.

EUgenics: what's not to like about that word?

Good genes? I;m all for it.

But it will only be valid and beneficial when we can actually apply the concept on solid science.

The 19th/20th fin de siecle eugenics movement was all old husbands' tales and old wives' tails.

I believe that is a reference to the Willie and Martin handcart companies, Kuato.

I saw a movie about that recently, "17 Miracles." Some curious facts:

1 of the males that died was a British midget, despite a congenital leg problem, tried to push a hardcart across the plains.

One of the surviving males actually had been in the party that discovered and brought relief to the infamous Donner Party, and strongly recommended to Mr. Martin against traveling so late in the year.
