OK, LR, anyone, is this a new idea for a renewable energy source?

Dig narrow inlets from the ocean to large but shallow artificial lagoons. Place a 2-way dam mechanism. High tide flows in, run the dam one way and generate power. Low tide: run the dam the other way as the water drains back out to the ocean.

Use multiple lagoons, and you can time the outlet so there's no interrupt in the electricity.

I don't know about this specific idea but there are working energy systems that use tidal changes to generate energy. I think the Brits were looking into it. I'm sure your idea would work especially in the North Atlantic where tides can change 30-50 feet.

Beachfront property is a premium, of course ... but not in Greenland. [Big Grin] I can just see an electric pipeline to keep Europe lit.

Since the lagoons are artificial, screening them off would prevent the damage to fish that occurs in ordinary dams.

Pete,

there are various methods of harvesting tidal energy. Have a look at this wikipedia page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_power

Your idea I think falls under a 'tidal barrage'

This is simply not possible for ecological reasons. The snail darter or spotted tail gecko or whatever will be disrupted.

If you're interested in novel energy generation ideas you should check out Makani Power. They fly tethered wings with wind turbines attached at 1,000 feet. Others have tried something similar with kites. Google "high altitude wind power" for more examples.
