'Random' drug testing at corporations is usually far from random. There are three groups

1) People that the corporation definitely wants to keep and are known to use drugs - miraculously they are never tested

2) People that the corporation is ok with keeping and known to not use drugs - these people will be overtested

3) People that the corporation has decided they'd like a reason to fire and want them to go quietly. They will suddenly be selected for a random drug test.

Perhaps selection and testing at businesses should be required to be done by independent companies? Perhaps risk weighted (so individuals who have jobs that have a high degree of risk of causing damage, or economic harm being tested more frequently).

How about evidence weighted? It only becomes relevant if you show up impaired and unable to safely perform your job functions?

I think waiting until someone is visibly impaired probably doesn't have the same liability insurance cost reduction benefits as conducting prophylactic testing. It should be the insurance companies who are overseeing the way testing is conducted, probably.

I'll remember that the next time I have a poppy seed muffin just before a drug test. [Smile]
