Rasmussen breaks it down.
quote:
Fifty percent (50%) of GOP voters now believe states should have the right to ignore federal court rulings, compared to just 22% of Democrats and 30% of voters not affiliated with either major party.
How about just going full on dictator:
quote:
Earlier this year, 26% of voters told Rasmussen Reports that President Obama should have the right to ignore federal court rulings if they are standing in the way of actions he feels are important for the country. Forty-three percent (43%) of Democrats shared this belief, while 81% of Republicans and 67% of unaffiliated voters disagreed.
The divide between parties could not be any more clear.

What happens as these growing minorities become majorities? What happens when they become super-majorities?

quote:
A plurality (47%) of voters continues to believe the federal government has too much influence over state governments, and 54% think states should have the right to opt out of federal government programs that they don’t agree with. Even more (61%) think states should have the right to opt out of federally mandated programs if the federal government doesn’t help pay for them.

I find the fact that so many voters are perfectly OK with the states ignoring federal court rulings hypocritical in light of the fact that 20% - 40% more of them (across the board) are opposed to the President doing so. The last time there was such disdain for the federal government we had a civil war. What has the federal government done to merit such hostility? As far as I can tell this discontent is largely due to the the media making mountains out of molehills in the guise of entertainment.

You can reconcile the seeming inconsistency by noticing that both Republican positions are ostensibly about opposing tyranny. In the case of Federal vs states the people taking the poll felt the Federal government shouldn't usurp the rights of the states and therefore remove the voice of that state's constituents. In the case of the President they oppose the ability to ignore similar things because in so doing the President would be further removed from being constrained to follow the will of the people and would be allowed to operate unilaterally if he so chose. This, too, would be a move towards tyranny, even accepting the possibility that if the tyrant is wise it can temporarily have positive effects.

It's not about being down on the Presidency, at least not based on these poll questions. It's about being consistently against various scenarios where the states have their power removed and given either to the Federal government or to the President.

The word "hypocritical" doesnt mean what you think it means. presidential consistency to court rulings relates to separation of powers, state submission to the fed is about fEDERALISM.

Conversely, the large number of lefties that overreach on federalism but think it's ok for the president to flout SCOTUS, arent necessarily hypocrites either, unless they championed the opposite set of principles when Bush Jr was POTUS.

Shakespeare's parable of the "sanctimonious pirate" who went to sea with a placard of The Nine Commmandments (he "razed" thou shalt not steal) works as hypocrisy only because of the assumption that the 10 commandments had divine origin. In contrast, the constitution's attempted balance of separation of powers vs federalism was and continues to be a compromise between competing interests and philosophies.
