Speaking from an italian point of view, I've had this same impression a lot of time. But I think that this come more from a simplistic definiton of what is left and right... there are a lot of nuances that does not fall clearly in this division. Progressive vs conservative, statalist versus libertarian, socialist versus capitalist, ecologic versus "industrial", liberal versus reactionary, laic versus religious, pacifist versus warmonger, tolerant versus fanatic... on some of these contraposition u.s. people tend to fall on a different spectrum respect to european countries or other cultures.

This is hilarious.

What do you think the "rest of the world" comprises? Western Europe and Canada?

Considering that Europe has embraced socialism to a much greater degree than the US has, your "center" is further on the left wing scale of American politics. America is still primarily driven by free market captialism, entrepreneurialship, individualism, religous faith and meritocracy...all principles that are the antithesis to secular socialism that is becoming more and more influential in European politics.
