quote: Athletics Director Laing Kennedy recently told student-athletes they have until Aug. 1 to remove their Facebook profiles, citing a need to protect both their identities and the university's image.
"We're really concerned about the safety of our student-athletes and some of the personal information some of them have on there," he said.
What do you guys think about this? Personally, I'm torn between agreeing the University has a right to protect its good name, and objecting to a publicly-funded institution oppressing free expression like this.

What the college is used to controlling is real world acts, actual drinking parties that take place on their grounds. What they are cracking down on though is online personal presentation, which as an activity of the mind like free speech. What is the difference between a student posing for a photograph casually holding a beer can and the same student writing a thesis on how 'inebriation is liberation'. Clearly if the university tried to discourage the thesis they would be hampering academic freedom.
In the case of the photos we have no obvious criminal or pornographic implications, just a college chicken-little-ing about it's reputation. Perhaps there is a case to be made the academic institutions ought to be as prissy as possible, give them students something to kick against, but I think that recreating 'Animal House' on the campuses of America is a bit silly...

I'm not sure I'm totally against allowing universities to be this choosy in who can be a representative of their school (athletes). My concern is that they apply it retroactively. You already got your scholarship and now they want you to change the terms of that scholarship? Is that what's happening? Or are they saying that starting next year all students who want to try out for our football team need to have a squeaky clean image, including anything found online?
If it's closer to the latter, I don't think I have a problem with it.
Is August 1st the date for renewel of scholarships or tryouts? Or is it just some arbitrary time to change their agreement?
