A possible method of rendering radioactive waste safe without burying it like dog crap for our great-great-great-great... (you get the idea) grandkids to clean up.

quote:
As the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) prepares to issue advice to government on nuclear waste, a group of physicists claims to have discovered a technique that could make nuclear waste much easier to deal with. The new technique, reported in the August edition of Physics World, would render nuclear waste harmless on timescales of just a few tens of years, instead of thousands.
Article here.

Like someone posted on that article, sounds COOL but would it be worth the energy you got from the process in the first place? Take energy from the fission process and then put it back in plus some to cool it down enough to cut down on radioactivity... net loss of energy? But at least it'd be a solution to nuclear waste processing. Anyone got more info on this?

Bah. Let us have breeder reactors and we can reduce the half-life so far that only our kids would have to deal with it. We could even mine heavy metals from it to use in electronic devices.

Oh, I think it should be saved. Conservationists should leap on the bandwagon to save nuclear waste. It's part of our heritage. Pile it up into tourist sites, and charge admission to view it.

Here we live 93,000,000 miles from a very large nuclear reactor .... Just wait for the sun to burn out. That'll take care of it.

What's all the fuss? Nuclear waste will destroy us before mass-warfare or some unforeseen microbe?

Wait. Is anybody suggesting that we should be more afraid of nuclear waste than nuclear bombs? That's not making sense to me.
