Who's your favorite character in the series? I'm tied for mine.

Peter Wiggin is my obvious first, because I like his ambition, and even though he's not as smart as a battle school student, I like his aggressiveness, and the original aura that Andrew portrays of him. I also like Peter becuase of the end of the Ender Quartet. I like how the recreated Peter is, even if it's not the original.

My other favorite character is Miro. I love the position he's put in with the "incest", as well as his body, and the thought process he goes through. I loved the MiroxJane bit, and how his thoughts were all jumbled with who he loved.

To deviate a little from the obvious choices, I really liked Dom Cristao. He was created with many admirable characteristics, including awareness of his weaknesses and the steps he had to take to overcome those. So much value is placed on strength and skill and virtue, and I think this trait of compensating for your weaknesses is really overlooked. As an example, the Children of the Mind are supposed to be chaste. Ideally they should be able to share a bed, and still maintain their chastity. He feels he would be unable to do this, so he limits the temptation by having separate beds. Many people would praise the person who shows greater strength by sharing the bed, but I think it's more important that he is aware of his weakness and takes steps to ensure that it doesn't catch him unawares. One of the better "moral" characters Card created, in that he isn't dogmatic and is at odds with the church, but still is represented in a positive light.

I loved Bean. I know it's a really typical answer, but I just loved him.

I don't think Peter was "not as smart as a battle school student". On the contrary, it was Peter's abilities which prompted the IF to ask the Wiggins to have Valentine, and later Andrew (though of course we know the Wiggins had their own motives for having a third).

JohnLocke, yes I agree with you somewhat but in Shadow to the Hegemon in Chapter 5 Peter thinks to himself:

Peter hadn't made it into Battle School. He didn't have what it took. For one reason or another, he was cut from the program without ever leaving home. So every kid who went to Battle School was more likely to make a good strategist and tactician than Peter Wiggin.

So Peter knows that he's not the smartest out of the kids who have what it takes, so he's aware there are better people out there, even if he acts like there isnt.

And I'm positive there are places where Theresa and John Paul (His parents), talk about Peter being very stupid and stubborn, thinking that things always go his way. Hence, he's not the smartest or best as most battle school students.

It's wasn't intelligence that kept Peter out of Battle school, it was the cruel and violent part of his personality.

After all, Bonzo (and others) weren't extremely smart either. They were afraid of Peter.

My favorite character is Colonel Graff. I never picked a favorite until just now, but I think Card did a great job with Graff. Because Graff -knows- what he is doing to Ender, and cares. It would have been so easy to have Graff be a plot-facilitating piece of cardboard, but Card, I think, identified with him and tried to make him real. Maybe it's because they both manipulate children for the questionable purposes of adults. [Smile] (I forgive Card more easily beause he only does this to people he knows are not real. I also forgive Graff because he's just like Ender - he only does what he thinks he must do to ensure survival.)

I love Valentine. I want to be a writer like her, powerful and influential. She is intelligent and compassionate. She's the best.
And also Jane. Jane is just... She has the best of all worlds. She gets to be a human, a machine, trees, everything!

I like Peter. Perhaps because he is ambitious, intelligent, and flawed.

I guess my two favorites would be Sister Carlotta (to have dinner and argue about religion with) and Petra, to hang with.

And Peter, no offense, but I don't think you understand your namesake's character. As far as sheer intelligence, there probably were very few Battle School students who would score higher. As has been pointed out, intelligence was simply not what kept him out, and just because his parents (two exceedingly intelligent people themselves) can criticize him doesn't mean he isn't intelligent.

However, if you extend the definition to emotional intelligence, then yes, Peter is pretty deficient. However, so are the vast majority of Battle School students. That's why out of all of them, Ender is the savior.
