I don't know what's wrong, but I do know that after the shut down, I tried to come back and realized I didn't miss it that much.

KE -

I've just been tired and irritated. I've noticed it showing in my posts - I've been snapping at people a lot more often, or simply not replying out of sheer irritation.

As to the general quality of the forums - I think we've lost a few people that raised the level of discourse. However, I'm not sure what the cure is at this point.

It goes in cycles. Sometimes there are a lot of really interesting conversations with people presenting unique perspectives, a lot of facts to back their arguments, a spirit of comradery...

Sometimes a bunch of lousy polemics.

I don't think there is a "cure" other than time and patience, and inviting quality folks.

I think, unfortunately, that the quality (or lack thereof) of some of Cards articles lately is affecting the sort of folks electing to read the forum, but that's just MHO.

It feels better, to me, than it was beforehand. Or maybe it's just my mind, not the actual state of the forum, that's better.

I'll try to stay off for a month or so and see if it gets any better...

If not, I'm coming back with a vengeance!

I'm not sure what y'alls specific complaints are, other than missing some posters who seem to have gone away. Our political threads end up being us vs them, because the issues raised seem to divide along those lines. I'm profoundly negative about the progress and prospects for the current wars, so I'm going to appear to beat that drum whenever I respond to comments about things going even moderately well. Even so, the "thems" too often use standard arguments that are easily countered. I wish they would shoot back harder with better ammunition, rather than cuttin and runnin.

Stepping back, we can talk about the process of the wars without necessarily becoming out and out polarized, and I'd like to see more discussion on those kinds of topics (cost, commitment, diplomatic alternatives, etc, etc).

Otherwise, I also am missing some good posters, and I'm even missing some that make me madder than hell.

Yeah, but there is a line, not even all that fine a line, between posters that make you "madder than hell" and want to argue/converse, and those that make you throw up your hands and think "there is no point talking with this guy".

Not a fine line at all, but it's like pushing a rope to get more better posts and more better posters. I don't know how to do it except by example. FWIW, I'll be posting somewhat less for a while due to a heavy travel schedule, so I'll be more lesser than usual.

its the quite before the storm

its simply that Israel is not doing anything news worthy at the moment.
our country is in a freak condition, the economy is blooming, the government is collapsing, and every once in a while some one brings the subject of war against Iran and/or Syria and/or Hizbulla

but nothing is really happening, even the palestinians are a little bored with us, and are starting to kill one another.

stay tuned, in a couple of months things might change

I think that the shut down did a lot to slow down conversation.

I have found that I have less zeal for discussion right now, ever since I gave up ornery for lent actually. I was very interested in commenting on things before and adding my two cents. I feel I have kinda established myself and the topics I've seen have not been as important to me to comment on.

I'll give everything a fair shake, but after awhile political banter turns into background noise to deeper topics that people don't talk about.

I can't remember the last time anybody posted a link to anything more substantial than a blog. That disappoints me. I used to like reading studies and other more thought-provoking data, like an old discussion we had on DDT that really helped me learn something. That seems rare these days.

And I never blog. [Razz]

I miss decent philosophical discussions.

Take a look at http://www.ornery.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=010230;p=0&r=nfx

There were a few honest answers, but it quickly descended into questioning the question. For me, nothing shuts down an open debate better than challenging the question being asked.

Maybe I'm just thin-skinned, but why would I want to start a thread when I know half of the responses are going to be criticisms of the topic?

I think I would read (and comment) more if more people made an effort to contribute to discussions, rather than using the forum as a pulpit to express their own views. More "here is what I think" and less "here is what is right".

Boy, I didn't think people noticed how it did it that quick.

Maybe that's why it doesn't seem to be lasting very long.

Unfair. A loaded question doesn't have to be answered naively. Look at the assumption underlying the question, which is that a belief in a God recognizable to you is a fulfillment and the absence of belief is due to either skepticism or cynicism, and is effectively a denial. It is honestly no different from asking the same question with any other noun not ordinarily available to the five senses or logic in the place of the word "God". Here's an example:
quote:
This is not a light question. I don't want to know why you don't believe in dragons. I want to know why dragons are antithetical to you as a person. If that doesn't work why is belief in dragons antithetical to you as a person.
It makes just as much sense (or lack thereof) as the original. If you don't see that, then you don't even realize how committed you are to the belief you invite people to explain their lack of similar feeling toward and, hence, how unanswerable the question is. That's why you get pushback, which seems to me to be legitimate, even if it is frustrating to you.

FWIW, my response was both sincere and fair, but got no response. From that I gather it was an "incorrect" answer to the question. That is often the difficulty when engaging in a discussion with a believer, that the lack of similar belief is incomprehensible to them and somewhat irrelevant.

KE, as I referenced in my recent post, I was wondering if anyone would agree with me about the decline of the Ornery forum. Pete, Red, Jav, and so many other conservative/moderate voices are gone or rarely present. Even the regulars' comments are brief and often quips more than dialogue, as if they have become bored with the subjects.

I think the general decline is one of personalities rather than topics. My guess is that the people who have been posting lately are just lower quality human beings, hence lower quality posts (which is why I still am under the 1000 post count, I don't want to be mistaken as one of the regulars).

I'll be honest, I've seen enough angry, empty rhetoric from the leftists on here to really just decide, Why bother? Why do i want to play the 'let's trade vitriol' game? I'm all for debate, but topics lately seem either to be things about which I know too little or too full of angry leftist posts to want to jump in. This hasn't been the case forever, just the last few weeks, really. Maybe I'm missing the good ones, too.

EDIT - Not that I'm against angry leftists. [Smile] We all have our 2 cents to contribute. I've simply had my fill of "Bush is evil!"

Gruevy, I have to believe some fraction of that unhappiness comes my way, as it seems that most of the other "lefties" have also left recently. Why don't you jump into those threads filled with empty angry leftie vitriolic rhetoric and provide some good solid substance? When I'm not growling and gnawing on your leg I promise I'll try to think about what you say [Smile] .

Forums are like relationships...it's better to just let things be instead of trying to talk about them or fix 'em.

If your girlfriend or wife tells you "we need to talk about our relationship." you know your day is about to be ruined.

I don't think it's you, DaveS. I'm easily irritated by crazy leftist mutterings, but I enjoy your posts as well as Tom Davidson's and 0Meg's (whom I really thought was a conservative, for some reason, until recently). Pretty much all the posters who appear to actually read the previous post before responding are cool by me.

Personally I'm rather new to the forums and still have to think about whether or not I'm posting something worthwhile or just being argumentative for the sake of arguing. I'll try to be extra diligent to ensure I don't make Ornery a less happy, less intelligent place.

GR, (that's not the growl I mentioned, but your initials [Smile] ) what *I* think this forum lacks is people willing to take a risk and air out their thoughts. Let them fly and maybe get shot down, buoy up others' or take aim and let 'er fly. This is supposed to be a discussion group, not a consensus therapy session! There are a lot of smart folks here who are too timid, some of whom I think say things that are dumber than toast, but that just means that mine probably look that way to them. C'mon in, the water is boiling cold!

God love Ron Paul for committing political suicide so quickly and effortlessly by mentioning that one reason the Middle East is unhappy enough with us to perform the 911 suicide attacks, is that we'd been bombing Iraq for 10 years before that.

It wonderfully matched the absurdity that Iraq was somehow responsible for 911.

I love Ron Paul and admire him for running, but am glad his death as a presidential candidate will be relatively swift.

Let me know when pro-legalization of drugs (all of 'em), legalization of prostitution, getting rid of the drinking age limit, and the abolishment of 75% of the Federal Government (including Social Security, the IRS, Medicare et al) are "right" positions, and I'll concede the point.
