Elizabeth Smart Verdict

What do you all think, was he really insane or a sane man who had a different view of the world (and was playing crazy in the courtroom) ?

I think the latter but am curious what you all (particularly our large LDS contingent) think.

The fact that he wasn't legally insane does not mean that he's a particularly sane man.

To be legally insane he'd have to not understand that society views what he did as a crime. Even if he did sincerely believe that God ordered him to do those things (and I don't buy that), it still would not make him legally insane, because his actions make it clear that he understood what he was doing was illegal, since he took cunning steps to circumvent the law and to avoid getting caught.

I see no injustice in holding him (or OBL, or Hitler) fully criminally liable for his crimes.

I agree with Ms. Smart's analysis. Every time he played the God card, he was trying to justify something he wanted for purely selfish reasons.

I happen to agree with Scott Peck's "People of the Lie" that evil is a form of mental illness. But not a form that the law needs to contemplate as a mitigating factor or excuse.
