Might be interesting to see where people stand, if they feel like taking the test. And whether they agree with how the test plots them.

http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

My own results:

http://www.politicalcompass.org/yourpoliticalcompass?ec=-6.25&soc=-5.33

I'm not extreme but definitely squarely Left-Libertarian. I agree with the result.

There were a few questions that were a little broad but it looks like we line up pretty closely.

My score

Taking it now. A lot of the questions don't allow for nuanced answers:

quote:
Controlling inflation is more important than controlling unemployment.
quote:
It's a sad reflection on our society that something as basic as drinking water is now a bottled, branded consumer product.
quote:
Protectionism is sometimes necessary in trade.
quote:
It is a waste of time to try to rehabilitate some criminals.
quote:
Some people are naturally unlucky.
The result I got was:

quote:
Economic Left/Right: -1.0
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.74

Which is pretty close. I consider myself to lean right rather than left, but otherwise sounds about right.

I also think many of the questions aren't useful.

My rating according to them...

Economic Left/Right: 5.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.21

Here's mine:

quote:
Economic Left/Right: -4.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.13

For what it's worth I think the questions are both phrased and geared with an excessively libertarian and leftist bent, almost veering the reader towards both left and libertarian. Take "what's good for huge corporations is good for everyone." Who the f**k is going to agree with this? Even the question is meant to make the reader take offence at 'the system' and will skew the results. This question is more than likely a primer to put the reader in a certain head space for the ensuing question. If anything I'd say the survey reads more like a psych test than a diagnostic, with the project being to see whether certain 'duh' outrageous questions will veer the reader towards answers in opposition to that question's content. So for the above corporation question, the reader would most likely select more anti-authoritarian (or at least anti-big-business) answers right after.

This test is over a decade old and is ludicrously biased toward Libertarian positions, as it was written to recruit people to the Libertarian Party.

If this is true then it figures. It read just like that. I count myself as a libertarian of sorts and even I was taken aback by the questions.

That one cracked me up. But according to my astrologist I was born under a bad sign, so what do I know?

I laughed at that question as well, but after some time I was inclined to agree when I expanded my interpretation of the question to include things like "circumstances of one's birth" as a part of "luck".
