I don't have time right now to get into it too extensively, but the topics about black/white racism and Muslim communities in Europe (and to some extent in the U.S) as well as the question regarding refugees had me wondering. Could the government, through tax credits or subsidies or incentives of some sort, take an active hand in mixing up communities?

Does it make any sense to offer a financial incentive to minorities to move into majority communities?

What about incentivizing the majority to move into minority areas? This obviously gets mixed up into racially imbalanced economics fast, making the financial incentives loose meaning when applied in that direction.

Could you apply this social pressure through financial incentives further? Majority/minority spouses being granted tax breaks?

How intrusive / personal could our government get in order to not just coexist peacefully but to truly form the melting pot we claim to be? What disasters await from any attempt down such a path?

Is it even a "good" goal to reduce suspicion/racism/xenophobia through diverse communities and families or is our national identity more about a group of smaller groups unwilling to sacrifice what makes them unique?

Obviously anti-poverty measures and overall economic prosperity are probably the more sure fire path to improving comfort and reducing suspicion of, well everyone...

There are some efforts in that direction:

II have advocated an additional property tax based on distance from NIMBY necessities such as homeless shelters, etc. If a rich neighborhood uses clout to keep something out to keep their prices inflated, tax 'em for that. Call it the nimby tax

NIMBY tax. I actually really love that idea.

Integrated schools probably lead to less voluntary segregation for those kids later on, so the gov. can do a lot by busing kids around. It's something that is generally not being done even though it's good for the kids.

NIMBY taxes sound like a perfect extension of **** you, pay me [Razz]

Might be hard to manage jurisdictionally since affluent communities have already seceded from municipalities in order to better enable NIMBY policies.

NIMBY taxes may raise the bar on how wealthy you need to be to exclude others and insulate yourself but that's about it. It has the benefit of being a government revenue gain though.

Subsidies can take the right to exclude out of the hands of the wealthy though. The problem is it becomes a government revenue deficit.

Not sure if either makes too large an impact. I think early education desegregation is probably a solid plan. The more normal it is to be different from those around you early on, the more normal it will be as an adult. You have to LEARN to be racist or insular. You have to be shocked or struck by a culture or accents or appearance being odd, or alien, in order to be xenophobic.

I cannot imagine a worse idea.

The way to end racism is education and opportunity. Unfortunately, we've destroyed the former and are well down the path destroying the latter for minorities.

What do you think is causing those things? What should be done to reverse or stop that destruction?
