The insanity of the left
« on: October 12, 2019, 04:30:55 PM »
Here we have the perfect example of just how nutty they’ve gotten.

Environmentalists pressured the state government to halt a gas pipeline expansion from New Jersey into New York.

Quote
Long Islanders were recently hit with bad news. National Grid, which provides natural gas for nearly 600,000 Long Island residents, announced it won’t be able to provide fuel for new customers if the proposed Williams Co. Transco pipeline expansion isn’t approved by May 15.

It wasn’t approved so National Grid put a moratorium on new customers. The fuel supply is simply not there, can’t do it. No pipeline, no gas supply. Simple.

Now, Gov Cuomo, who helped kill the pipeline, is using an obscure state law regulating utility companies through the power of the Public Service Commission, accusing National Grid of acting in bad faith and ordering they hook up new customers (about 1,100 of them).

Quote
The Cuomo administration is ordering National Grid to provide natural gas hookups to over 1,100 previously denied Brooklyn-based customers.

The Public Service Commission, the state body that licenses and oversees public utility companies, announced Friday that National Grid must provide service to customers or else face “millions of dollars in penalties.”

Cuomo is ordering National Grid to provide gas he and environmentalists made sure they don’t actually have or face millions in fines. What could they do? Millions in fines or hookup new customers. They hooked them up. By the way, Cuomo has been reiterating his opposition to the Williams Pipeline.

Of course, there’s consequences for this stupidity:

Quote
But there isn’t enough natural gas in the existing pipeline to keep adding more service points. If they continue to hook up new customers, you’re going to see the backpressure in the lines start dropping during peak demand hours. If you look at the configuration of a typical gas furnace installation you’ll note that if the incoming gas pressure drops too low, the furnace will simply shut down for safety reasons until the pressure is restored. The same is true for many other appliances that use natural gas or propane.

So by doing this, Cuomo and the environmentalists are assuring a disaster as they head into winter. It would be laughable but we’re looking at the very real possibility people will freeze if we get some sever cold weather.

I’m sure it’ll be Trump’s fault.

It's fascinating how often people who completely unprepared to deal with the entirely predictable results of their own actions. It gets even more amusing when they won't even accept responsibility. Yes, that applies to more than any one group of people but this is a fine example of it in action.

I'm sure they'll also tell you that more government oversight is needed to ensure such tragedies can be averted in the future. Greedy corporation shouldn't have oversold their capacity.

These were in some cases existing customers who had temporarily halted service for renovations, the utility just didn't turn it back on. No new capacity would be needed. Meanwhile, the pipeline would not have been operational for another two years in any event.

I'm generally in favor of pipelines, especially since cng is much cleaner than oil, a likely replacement.

Describing this as crazy environmentalists demanding new service while preventing supply is just not accurate. It's more likely an attempt by the company to extort the community by fabricating a shortage.

There's an investigation into whether the shortage danger is real or just a negotiating tactic on the part of the company, which might provide some clarity.

Let me guess, investigators are from Cuomo’s justice system.
