Welcome to the New Ornery American Forums!
« on: December 12, 2015, 12:13:42 AM »
We have migrated the Ornery Forums to new software.

The old forum has been disabled, but will remain available for reference.

Accessing your Acccount
  • Password Reset - In order to access your account, you will need to reset your password. You can do that here: http://www.ornery.org/forum/index.php?action=reminder. Please enter your username or email address from the old forums, and a password reset link will be sent to you.
  • Account Missing -  If your account does not exist, please simply register it, using the same email address you registered with on the old forums. If you do not have access to that email address, please contact me to discuss the matter.
  • Problems - If you have any trouble accessing your account, please email me for assistance: OrneryModerator@hotmail.com.

Continuing Conversations from the Old Forums
There is no completely painless way to way to make this transition. After reviewing the matter for a bit, we decided to disable the old forums immediately. If you are in the middle of a conversation on the previous board, I recommend that you start a new thread here to continue that conversation. For the posts that were active in the past few days, I have created these topics already. If it goes back more than a week and you'd like to pick up the conversation, please follow suit.

Inactive Forums Removed
The Ornery Writers Workshop, Ornery U, and the Ornery American Book Club have been removed, due to inactivity. Posts that used to be appropriate for those forums can now be posted in general comments instead. If there is significant interest in bringing these forums back, let me know. :)

New Features
  • Like Posts - You can now "like" posts.
  • WYSWIG Editor - You can use a visual editor by clicking the appropriate button when making a post.
  • Additional UBB Tags Enabled - The following tags are enabled, feel free to play with them: abbr acronym anchor br code email hr nobbc pre s sub sup

If you run into any issues with the new software, please contact me by email (or post here) and let me know what problems you're facing so I can help resolve the matter.

Once the forums are up and running, we can look at enabling some of the other features of this software, like private messages and polls.

Glad to see we're finally on a newer platform. :)

Are there plans to migrate the content from the old forum?

Is this still hosted by the OSC?  Shouldn't there be a link on the front page going back to his "front page" of Ornery.org?

As to "where is everyone?"  Rafi emailed me informing me of his current digital waterboarding; demanding he repent and reveal his true identity if he wants to be released from forum detention.

But more over, people probably haven't seen it yet, decide how suspicious they are it's not a some sort of fishing expedition, then decide if it's worth the effort to replace a bookmark.  :P

Other than the tread titles, I don't think there's going to be backend content migration. We just have to manually grab what we want to reply to and bring it here.

I do need to remand myself that it's pointless to refresh the tab that I have open to server that purpose when I find the time to, though.

That's pretty disappointing, if true.  I would have to admit that I don't have the spare time to volunteer to work on it, though, so I can't really fault anyone else for not signing up for the work.

Is it a general setting, or a personal setting to have the forum sorted so that the threads with the most recent posts are on top?  Be darn inconvenient if it can't be done at all.

EDIT- Or is it already done that way and I should have checked out the date and time stamps?   :-\

I'd like to, but there are some problems with doing so. First, someone would need to write a translator from the old database to the new database. Second, some user names with unique characters (like ') are not permitted on this software, so we would have to work out a mapping from the old user name to the new user name. Finally, something was slowly breaking with the old database; a lot of old threads were not loading correctly, and posts seemed to be missing.

Finally, there is cost, security, and time concerns.

For the time being, we are keeping the old forums as "read only". This is very similar to what things would be like if we imported the old threads, so it seems like a "good enough" solution.

Yes. I believe the system administrator is making that change this week. I know he has a heavy workload, so it might take a little time.

The general setting is the same as the old forums: newer posts on the bottom.

I believe there is a personal option you can choose to reverse that.

edit: here is a link to that settings page: http://www.ornery.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;area=theme;u=26

Hmm I wonder how many people will drop their ornery habit due to the migration.  I admit to contemplating doing so :)

Would it make a difference to you (or others) if the old content were brought over?

Except for the somewhat understandable loss of the old threads and the somewhat surprising (to me, at least) loss of most of the old posters, this forum functions better.  It even seems like the Mod has taken a day job or something and is leaving us to hash out our family problems for the most part.

Alas, I've received word that AI Wessex was crushed by the recent election.  It's a sign of the coming times that I have appeared to take the place of that noble soul.  I predict things won't go well.

Merry Christmas everyone!

And thank you for being an awesome community this past year. Despite a highly contentious election, I don't think we had any serious issues arise. I think we all found that happy medium of hard discussions without personal attacks, and I'm grateful for that. Looking forward to an even better 2017. :)

I have decided to make my role as OrneryMod publicly known. I have been serving in this role since ~February 2013 when the previous mod stepped down and asked me to take his/her place.  I believe I am the 8th person to have the job since 2004.

I have often considered making my identity public.  My main reason for keeping it private was that I was afraid it would negatively impact my ability to participate as a regular member. In addition, Ornery has a long tradition of secret mods, and I didn't want to mess with the "magic recipe" that makes Ornery the special place that it is. For those reasons, I attempted to keep my identity secret.

Over time, more and more posters have managed to guess, deduce, catch me accidentally posting from the wrong account, or learn from me directly OrneryMod's identity, so at this point it's basically an open secret. I think that creates some negative situations that I would like to avoid, and it is unfair to those of you who haven't figured it out or been told. This is especially true given the small size of our community. (I think we have around 35 active members right now).

So I am OrneryMod. When I am away on vacation, I ask Paladine to serve as my substitute mod. It hasn't come up in these four years, but if he's also unavailable, I would probably ask one of the previous mods to help out while I was away.

When I post as JoshuaD, I am just myself. At no point when I post as JoshuaD am I talking as the moderator or threatening moderator action. Similarly, if I post as OrneryMod, I am that station, doing my best to fairly maintain the rules given to us by the Cards.

I try my best to keep the two identities entirely independent.  I would appreciate it if each of you took the same approach when discussing with me -- if you disagree with my politics or philosophy, talk to me; if you have a rules issue, please email OrneryModerator@hotmail.com. This will help maintain the clear distinction between my personal account and the job of OrneryMod.

Thank you Jesus, Thank you JoshuaD, separate thank you to OrneryMod#8.
Thank you also OMsquared also known as OrneryMod#1 or #0 (which I would prefer) or alternately we can call him OM2/OrneryMod#2 who is also alive (thank Jesus) and present (thank Jesus).  OM2, while I have not yet forgiven you nor am I capable AFAIK of forgetting what you did to me in secret in 2001 (as I promised I would not forgive or forget unless and until you publicly came clean about it), I also will never forget the good you did for me and for Thing Two.  If I were capable of weighing the good you did me against the bad that I believe (true or not) that you did, me, then I swear on my life (fully aware that I'm failing to live up to the OSSotM) that the Good-OM2 did me would totally outweigh the bad.  But a poisoned trust does not go away with time, like the Nazgul Knife still sent Frodo to the Havens away from the Sam he loved (whether homoerotically or not I care not.) Speaking of homoerotically, your spanking allusions were creepy, sir, and that's saying a lot since I'm a great fan of spanking, so long as it's unsafe, insane, and totally freaking consensual.  If you feel the need to hit me sir, you have my consent to hit me in the face when I see you, and i'll still embrace you like a long lost brother if you consent.  And if you think that's creepy, feel free to tell me so through FB messenger or through the new purported message system which I've never tried nor received a doggone thing but look forward to using. I cannot presently receive communications from any other sources.

As for you Msquared, you've never harmed me and you've always been my loyal friend.  I hope one day to show you how I DM and I have finally opened my mind to the possibility of remote gaming.  My house is open to you so long as I have a house and so long as my 1/2 surviving roommate consents, which he does.  And now that I'm on this side of the missisippi and past the edge of pretended sanity, beware of inviting me to your home because if you do I might just start walking that way now, to make up to you for how I treated OM2, which (forgive and correct me if I'm wrong) you have heretofore failed to distinguish from your true self, Msquared, whom I have always loved and admired.

I haven't noticed that. I just went to ornery.org and clicked "forums" and was brought to the forum front page with the three forums visible. Can you tell me exactly what you're doing so I can take a look?

If a coup d’état involves a porn star, or some other sort of sex, worker, or sex, extortionist, isn’t it more accurate to refer to it as a coup des Ta-tas?

This is inappropriate for an introduction to the forum. And no, Pete, this is not how we normally talk, nor is it normal.

It’s not normal or right for a president to be impeached or prosecuted for felony for paying off a sex extortionist with his own money.

The idea that a corporation's funds belong to its chairman is not accurate.

That's reason for him to be sued by his stockholders. Not impeached or prosecuted by the state.  Show precedent.

If a Republican administration prosecuted Patrice Cullors for using BLM funds to pay off her whore 970,000, you would not shout foul?

Perhaps you are having difficulty understanding which bit is the wrongdoing and which bit is the crime?
