You know what - I'll admit that condensing Trump's word salad down to "the unemployment rate went down" was not accurate.  That was a mistake on my part.

But the egregious part of the quote wasn't the part about the unemployment rate, so focussing on that is just silly; especially since part of the words he was trying to shoehorn into Floyd's mouth were, in fact, about how great the economy is doing:
Quote
Because if you look at Georgia, if you look at Florida, if you look at South Carolina, if you look at so many different places that have opened up, I don’t want to name all of them, but the ones that are most energetic about opening, they are doing tremendous business.

No, the egregious part, and the part that should not be at all controversial to agree with, is that a man who was just violently killed, and whose death has triggered civil unrest around the country, should not be used as a prop by the president to advance his political agenda. It's simply obscene.  Focussing on whether all or only some of the reasons that a murdered man should be happy about were listed is to completely miss the point.

No argument there, and thank you Donald for being able to admit to a mistake. Invoking Floyd in any way suggesting that he would be happy is disgusting. If one were to mention him at all, which one shouldn't do in the middle of a speech about economics, it should be only to say that we owe it to him to effect serious lasting change. I think Floyd's ghost would be opening up gas mains right now.

DonaldD, to the extent that politicians routinely use bad events to prop up their own success, I agree with you there. It would obviously have been nicer to just offer his condolences to Floyd's family or something and leave it at that. However I will mention that the most immediate and preceding context of his speech prior to the comment about Floyd was that the police (and Secret Service, and National Guard) did a great job cleaning up the cities, which have restored to order. And right after that he goes into the bit about how Floyd would be proud. So if we were going to ascribe an 'implication' in the placement of invoking him, it would seem to be in context of the issue of law and order and establishing secure city spaces. I suppose in some oblique way "law and order" would have been better for someone wrongly killed by an unlawful police act, but on the other hand 'order' seems to typically reside on the saw of those enforcing order, i.e. the police. So a 'law and order' narrative seems to me mostly antagonistic to any kind of sympathy with what happened to Floyd.

It's also possible the speech isn't very well written around that part, because if you take the words about Floyd out of context they're actually nice enough, if we ignore the preceding paragraph about ending the looting.

I don't get why you're trying to take apart his speech and rearrange it out of context so that maybe it doesn't sound so bat*censored* crazy.  He's bat*censored* crazy.  Every time he opens his mouth he says things that are bat*censored* crazy.  It's really as simple as that.  Dead George would be happy if you all would admit that.

You have a seeming irresistible impulse to tinker with something that was crazy to say to show that it could have been improved with no changes other than a little more copywriting help.  Dead George is not happy that you are doing that.

Interesting closing paragraph in the first article you referenced:

Quote
Thank you for reading this post about how the insane thing that the president of the U.S. said was actually not quite insane in the way it first seemed but actually equally if not more insane in a slightly different way.

I can agree with that.  I hope Trump doesn't keep calling George back from the grave whenever he needs to pat himself on the back.

This is a great post.

You made a mistake by falling for fake news BUT that just serves to prove your point. Right. smh

It’s obscene for Trump to use Floyd’s death in any way. Only Trump. If anyone on the left wants to use it, perfectly fine.

Great post. Really encapsulates the modern left.

Well, I guess we could dig up the news reports where the Floyd family said "George wouldn't have wanted this" in regards to the looting and rioting.

So in the context of his family saying George would not have wanted people to riot and loot in his name. He should be happy that the rioting and looting has been stopped.

Dead George is dead.  He doesn't want anything, except perhaps to still be alive, which is unlikely to happen.  Projection is a wonderful thing.

Not to mention that the wonderful jobs report that proves he's doing such a fine job was wrong.  He didn't mention, as well, that black unemployment went up even in the erroneous numbers.  I won't wait for him to amend his remarks.

I said that if you look at his comments about Floyd in isolation there's nothing wrong with it. You are now saying I'm re-arranging things to 'tinker with it'. Not honest. And don't speak for the dead, please.

There's a link to the full transcript in here: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/06/trump-george-floyd-in-heaven-pleased-with-trump-administrations-record.html

Transcript: https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/donald-trump-press-conference-transcript-on-jobs-report

It doesn't seem to be quite as bad as some people are making it out to be employment numbers but it's a pretty stupid thing to say.

Yeah, we kind of expect Trump to say dumb things at this point but I'm not a fan of selective editing, whether it's done by the D's  or the R's.

Martin Gugino is currently still hospitalized, in serious but stable condition.

That the president of a country would name one of its citizens, and suggest that the injury that has kept them hospitalized in serious condition for over 4 days, was some kind of "set up" (the implication being what, that he is faking?) is simply disgusting.

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump's campaign is demanding CNN retract and apologize for a recent poll that showed him well behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

The demand, coming in the form of a cease and desist letter to CNN President Jeff Zucker that contained numerous incorrect and misleading claims, was immediately rejected by the network.

That's been your argument all along.  You keep pointing fingers at Democratic Governors, Democratic states, Democratic Congressmen/women, blacks, immigrants, scientists, doctors.  I don't think I've ever seen you complain about anybody who could be considered conservative or Republican.  Your idea of country only has one kind of people.

Trump Administration Reverses Transgender Health Protections on the Four-Year Anniversary of the Deadly Pulse Nightclub Shooting

Whether you agree or not - coincidental timing?

I tend to think not based on current events. They proposed the rule change a year ago, June 2019. Far more likely they wanted to make the proposal and finalize it during Pride month.

The US Supreme Court has ruled against President Donald Trump's bid to end a programme that protects hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation.
The justices upheld lower court rulings which found his move to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme was "unlawful".

I have been slowly coming to the opinion that Trump will step aside over the summer due to "health issues" and the GOP will have to scramble to find a comparably mentally impaired replacement.  Actually, that shouldn't be too hard.  I wonder what his excuse will be, but I expect he'll announce it while doing circles around the press gaggle in a golf cart.

I've always thought that Trump was at odds with himself in that he never wanted to be president but wanted to win.
Time and again Trump is underestimated and as to what he will do or should do... I'm betting even he does not know.

Personally I don't understand why anyone in there seventies with enough money to be more then comfortable would want the job.
If I'm honest, and politically incorrectly ageist, I think their should be an age limitation on the office.

I don't see him exiting the race at this stage.

But I'm guessing a resignation after January 21st, 2023 could possible, then President Pence would have an incumbency advantage with over 1 year under his belt, and would be constitutionally eligible for 2 more terms if so inclined.

That's the thing, he ONLY wants to win, not to place or show.  If he doesn't have a path to victory by, you know, winning the vote, and he can't suppress the vote, and he can't buy off faithless electors, and he can't declare himself pasta for life, why wouldn't he hightail it to his winter dacha-lago en permanente?  Of course, he would need a get out of jail free (pardon) card from Pence on the way out or he would out Pence for his own moral turpitude and lock him in a room with 4 prostitutes for a month with no masks of any kind.  As you can see, not a joke.

Whereas here, you have the leader of the country threatening "protesters", literally those protected by the first amendment.

Given the context of the quote, he either should have put quotes around protester, or simply left it out.

He could have been targeting the peaceful ones, but I think he was speaking more to "the disrupters"(peaceful or not) and the non-peaceful variety.

While AntiFa can't be linked to the disruptive protesters(who would try to block Trump and others from even reaching the venue), that also has been an ongoing problem for Trump rallies even immediately prior to the Covid19 outbreak.

I it could be said Trump wants to apply an "abortion clinic standard of protest" on Trump rallies if you'd like?

It's funny how Trump's messages have to constantly be reinterpreted and modified to make them look better than they actually are. I'm going to take him at his word.

I'd take it in the context of an abortion clinic and when the "Right to Life" protesters were informed their "right to protest" did not extend to being able to block access.

You think they should have the right to prevent you from exercising your rights?  That's what the phony freedom of religion "movement" is all about.  If I were the only doctor on duty in my emergency room and someone came in with a gunshot wound wearing a red MAGA hat, my religion might be such that I would refuse to treat him because the color red signifies the devil.  He can go to another emergency room for treatment.  Freedom of religion for one is freedom of religion for all, baby.
