Did Technology Review fall for a joke paper?
« on: December 12, 2019, 03:28:40 PM »
Here is a recent Technology Review paper,

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/614775/a-new-way-to-make-quadratic-equations-easy

If you plug in 1 for A in the typical quadratic formula, it simplifies to the "new easier formula'.  I can't tell if the TR writer can't do math or what.

Well that's exactly what he's saying - manipulate the formula first to set A = 1 rather than accounting for it in the QF. Then another manipulation to determine the actual roots using basic algebraic technique. As a teaching tool, its fine, although there is room to wonder if finding roots is really a useful thing to know. I use a decent amount of math, and solving symbolic equations isn't something I've done since school.
