Imo, if you want San Francisco employees, pay a San Francisco wage.

Yeah, SF is pretty messed up right now, and I think there's gonna need to be a bit more spreading the wealth around to keep it from going right to hell.

Operating a call center there is madness.

Agreed.  For me, this calls for a revival of federalism.  I think the Bay area should probably be its own state.  The Bay is to modern America what Rhode Island was to the founding thirteen states.  It's the proud, wealthy, leftmost American proto-state, and it deserves its own representation.  Trapping it in the uber-state that elected Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronald Reagan, is something akin to the 2/3 compromise.

(btw, I do love the fact that the spell checker on my lover's computer actually corrects me on the spelling of Schwarzenegger!).  So much better than my cell's autocorrect!.

If SF gets its own state, which other metros should? NYC and Chicago come to mind.

Though I don't think this innovation would do good things for rural/urban cooperation.

Some of the commentary I've seen suggest SF's problem is NIMBYism gone mad. Too many people are unwilling to allow enough housing to meet the population density.
