Yeah in the long  run I think combining the debt limit with the budget was a wrong move.  Most of Congress does not want the US to default and so a deal of some sort was going to be worked out.

If they had done the debt limit as one deal and in the fall held fast on the new budget, which might have led to a Gov shut down but not cause the US to default,  they would have had a stronger hand.

I think the Dems will help him pass it.  It leans more to what the Dem's wanted then what the Reps wanted.

The Progressive left wing will vote against it, as will the MAGA Trumpist/Freedom Causus members, but I think most of the rest on both sides will pass it.

it is a done deal in the Senate. McConnell has already come out in support.

Well it looks like their might be an agreement to suspend the debt ceiling until Jan 2025, after the next election. Of course the Freedom Caucus says they can not support any part of this since they had to give up a few small thing and this might help Biden, and the US but they do not really care about this, instead of hurting Biden.

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/mccarthys-next-challenge-sell-debt-060223850.html

Now lets see if McCarthy can muster enough votes with out the MAGA Trumpist and Jefferies can swing enouhg Dem to get this passed.

Well it has been 2-1/2 years and no evidence has been provided that has convinced any court in any county/State in the country.  Even in states run by Republicans. Audits, recounts, more audits. Nothing.

There has been small level fraud found, say like Mark Meadows being registered to vote in 2 states, or Republicans voting for dead relatives, but no voter fraud at any level that would change the outcome.

You can think there was fraud all you want, but since it did not happen, you have no evidence of it.

The Republicans are so concerned about the debt that after cutting or holding spending, they want to reduce revenue by doing a tax cut.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/republicans-preparing-major-tax-cut-210440437.html

Cost: 3.5 Trillion over 10 years.

Yep, waiting to hear the normal story about how this will jump start the economy.

Now you love Obama? Just for this one thing?  Maybe he was wrong then. How many Dems opposed that at the time? Something that happened amost 15 years ago.

The 14th Amendment was passed in 1868, so it has been in effect for 155 years.

No one has pushed the fact that the debt limit is probably unconstitutional. Since every congress has raised it as needed. Except this one.

General Comments / Re: Debt Limit Standoff

Once the budget has been passed, by the last congress, it is incumbent on the Executive Branch to pay the bills already approved. This is what the 14th amendment says.

Even McCarthy thinks the Dems should have raised the debt limit before he took office.  Like every one was saying they should becuase this fight was very predictable.

And if the SC gets it under the 14th Amendment, a plain reading of that says the debt limit is unconstitutional.

How about Republicans? Will they say, we should have negotiated?  I mean the far right of the party says no negotiation on what they want. In fact for them, it does not go far enough.

And how about the next time? Once you link the two, every time this comes up, they can use it as a hostage.

The Republicans want to rewrite the last two years. they want to tank the national and international economy and then blame Biden. And use it as a campaign issue.

Cherry

You are right it is hard to trust. Just like Republicans claim that cutting taxes raises revenu, but it doesn't.

If there were a surplus, the Freedom Causus would want a tax cut.  If we are bringing in more money they we are spending, then we are taxing at too high a rate.

These Republicans are not fiscal conservatives. They want no taxes (since most of them are of the liberatian bent of all taxes are theft) and would love to destroy the national gov.

If Republicans were serious about the debt they would accept tax increases to go along with spending cuts.

Attacking the problem from both directions is the responsible way to do it.
